Done deal | Calum Chambers extends Arsenal contract

Arsenal have confirmed Calum Chambers has signed a new deal at the club until 2021.

The 22-year-old signed from Southampton in 2014 and has gone on to make 60 appearances for the Gunners in all competitions.

“Proud to sign a new contract with Arsenal. I’m still a young player and I want to have my best years playing for this football club,” said Chambers on Twitter.

“I want to win as many trophies with Arsenal as possible. I’m going to repay the fans for the faith they’ve shown in me. Can’t wait to get going again.”

The England international has struggled for playing time this season, so far failing to make a Premier League appearance due to injury problems and stiff competition from Shkodran Mustafi, Laurent Koscielny and Nacho Monreal.

After turning out for the u23s in September, Chambers was given 45 minutes in the EFL Cup win over Doncaster Rovers five days later. He’s yet to make a second appearance in any competition, however.

Last season, Arsenal loaned out the 22-year-old to Middlesbrough, where he made 26 appearances as the North-East side suffered relegation back to the Championship.

The centre-back is yet to nail down a starting place at the Emirates, but Arsene Wenger might be thinking of the future by tying Chambers down for another three-and-a-half years.

Per Mertesacker is set to retire at the end of the season to become Arsenal’s Head of Academy while Laurent Koscielny revealed to Sky Sports in May that he’s been struggling with a chronic achilles injury which forces him to take daily treatment.

As a result, there may be a void in the defence that Chambers can fill. According to the Telegraph, Arsenal turned down a bid from Crystal Palace in the summer, proving they have faith in his ability.

The England defender will be hoping to feature more heavily in the second-half of the season.
